Insurance Claims Surge After Last Month’s Floods in Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu, Last month’s heavy rainfall has led to significant financial losses, with the Insurance Authority reporting the highest number of flood and landslide claims in the Kathmandu Valley.
According to the data, over 87 percent of the claims were filed in the valley’s three districts- Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. A total of 2,513 claims were made, with Kathmandu alone accounting for 1,731 claims, followed by 646 in Lalitpur and 136 in Bhaktapur.
In terms of the financial toll, the three districts demanded compensation amounting to Rs 6.67 billion, with Rs 16.27 million (94 percent) already paid out. Kathmandu bore the brunt of the damage, with claims amounting to Rs 3.96 billion, followed by Lalitpur at Rs 2.27 billion, and Bhaktapur at Rs 424.2 million.
Chitwan was the third most affected district, with claims worth Rs 645.8 million, while Makwanpur, Kavre, and Sankhuwasabha districts followed with claims of Rs 51.74 million, Rs 33.75 million, and Rs 14.54 million, respectively.
In contrast, districts like Dailekh, Tanahun, and Kailali recorded the lowest insurance claims, with figures as low as Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000, and Rs 10,000, respectively.
The Insurance Authority noted that claims were received from 54 districts across all seven provinces, highlighting the widespread impact of the natural disaster.
