Buddha Air and UNFPA Launch In-Flight Initiative to Raise Awareness on Gender-Based Violence

June 16th, 2025

Kathmandu — In a unique collaboration aimed at addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through everyday experiences, Buddha Air has partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to integrate GBV awareness messaging into its domestic flight operations. The initiative seeks to bring vital information on GBV prevention and support services directly to passengers during their journeys.

The formal launch of the campaign took place this week, marking a significant milestone in corporate social responsibility and public engagement in Nepal’s aviation sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, UNFPA Representative for Nepal, Won Young Hong, emphasized the significance of bringing the message to people in transit. “By embedding gender-based violence messaging into the everyday travel experience, this partnership with Buddha Air helps bring critical information to people where they are—on the move,” said Hong. “I extend my sincere gratitude towards Buddha Air for championing safety, dignity, and rights for all.”

The in-flight messaging is designed to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and direct passengers to available support systems, including helplines and local resources. It complements UNFPA’s broader national strategy to combat GBV through awareness, prevention, and survivor support.

Aastha Basnet, representing Buddha Air, highlighted the airline’s commitment to leveraging its platform for social change. “We’re proud to partner with UNFPA to help break the silence around GBV. As a company that connects communities, we believe in using our reach to create positive change—starting with information, empathy, and action,” said Basnet.

The initiative is being hailed as a model for purpose-driven business in Nepal, integrating advocacy into routine customer experiences. By aligning with UNFPA’s mandate and national GBV prevention goals, the campaign reflects how the private sector can play a proactive role in addressing critical social issues.
