FEJA and Nepal Insurance Authority Hosted a One-Day Training on Insurance Awareness

Kathmandu — A special one-day interaction and training program focused on insurance journalism was successfully conducted on Monday by the Female Economic Journalist Association (FEJA), in collaboration with the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA). The event aimed to strengthen the knowledge and reporting capabilities of women journalists covering financial and insurance-related issues.
Inaugurating the program, Sushildev Subedi, Executive Director of NIA, emphasized the growing importance of insurance in Nepal’s financial landscape and the need for deeper, fact-based reporting in the sector. He stated that the Authority will continue to prioritize similar capacity-building initiatives in the future, especially for women in journalism.
FEJA President Sharmila Thakuri noted that the training is a meaningful step towards empowering women financial journalists to uncover critical issues and challenges within the insurance sector. “This initiative will not only help enhance journalistic skills but also contribute to the overall development of insurance reporting in Nepal,” she said, expressing hope for continued collaboration with the Authority.
Deputy Director Dahal elaborated on the fundamentals of policy formulation for both life and non-life insurance. Ram Konju further explained claim procedures, highlighting challenges insurers face in timely settlements, and reminded participants that “insurance should not be seen as an investment but as a safeguard.”
Santosh Karki introduced participants to the Nepal Financial Reporting Standards (NFRS), explaining its role in ensuring consistency and comparability in insurance companies’ financial statements both nationally and globally.
Nirmala Malla provided insights into the phased implementation of Risk-Based Capital (RBC) frameworks in Nepal, a crucial regulatory measure designed to align capital requirements with the actual risk profile of insurance companies.
The interactive sessions were moderated by Ejila Upreti, General Secretary of FEJA, who ensured smooth coordination and participant engagement throughout the program. The program drew participation from 25 women journalists and featured sessions led by four Deputy Directors of the Nepal Insurance Authority: Keshav Dahal, Ram Konju, Santosh Karki, and Nirmala Malla.
