Flood at Kerung Border Causes Major Losses; Insurance Authority Yet to Release Damage Assessment

July 16th, 2025

Kathmandu – The devastating flood that struck the Kerung border checkpoint on the Chinese side on Ashar 24 (July 8) has resulted in significant loss of life and property. However, even after more than a week since the incident, there has been no official clarity regarding the status of insurance claims or the extent of insured losses.

The flood, which severely affected both the Chinese and Nepali sides of the customs checkpoint, claimed the lives of at least six Chinese nationals and more than 17 Nepali citizens. Dozens of newly imported vehicles awaiting customs clearance on both sides of the border were swept away, along with transport trucks, footwear, clothing, and other goods stored at the checkpoint.

According to officials at the Rasuwa Customs Office, the customs yards on both the Nepali and Chinese sides suffered extensive damage. While initial assessments confirm significant property loss, the complete details are still being compiled.

Despite the severity of the incident, the Nepal Insurance Authority has yet to make any public disclosure regarding how many insurance claims have been filed, what losses are covered under existing insurance policies, and how many of the affected parties were uninsured.

Efforts to contact Purna Bahadur Thapa, Information Officer at the Insurance Authority, were unsuccessful as he remains out of contact.
