Kathmandu — Madan Bhatt, widely recognized as one of Nepal’s most successful insurance agents, has set benchmarks in the industry with an illustrious career spanning over two decades. Bhatta, who was born in Dadeldhura, Sudurpashchim Province, began his professional journey with a small grocery store before entering the insurance sector in 2002. Today, he is the Senior Agency Manager at Nepal Life Insurance Company and has been crowned Nepal’s top agent multiple times.

In this exclusive conversation with Beemapost, Bhatt shares insights on his career, the value of insurance trust, and why every individual should consider life coverage.

Madan Sir, welcome to Beemapost.

Bhatt: Thank you very much.

You are a well-known figure in Nepal’s life insurance sector. How did you achieve such success?

Bhatt: There’s no fixed formula for success. It’s about building trust and working with honesty. In my 23 years in this profession, I have been Nepal’s top agent once at LIC Nepal and seven times at Nepal Life Insurance. I’ve earned MDRT, COT, and TOT titles. To me, the most important thing is to uphold the trust that clients place in us. The insurance policy is not just a piece of paper — it’s a certificate of that trust.

Did you ever imagine such recognition was possible for an insurance agent?

Bhatt: Not at all. I started with a small grocery store, and many advised me not to waste time on insurance. But I had the determination to try, even applying for a job with the Nepal Police at one point. Over time, I realized that with persistence, it is possible to achieve great heights. I even expanded into other businesses, such as a chicken station and now a resort in Dhangadhi, but insurance has always been my main identity.

Do you have other ventures apart from insurance?

Bhatt: Yes. I own a chicken station franchise and am building a resort. I once invested in the stock market without adequate research, putting in about NPR 12.5 million and losing nearly NPR 6 million. That experience taught me to avoid investments I don’t fully understand.

Despite being a successful businessman, what keeps you in insurance?

Bhatt: Even when I took a break to focus on my chicken station, which earned well, I didn’t feel satisfied. Insurance gives me a sense of purpose that other ventures cannot replace. That’s why I returned to Nepal Life Insurance.

Why should the average person buy life insurance?

Bhatt: Many think they’ll get more benefit by investing in land or at interest, but that’s not the point. Insurance is not about profit; it’s about financial protection. With insurance, you don’t need to deposit the full coverage amount upfront, yet you get full risk protection. It also gives peace of mind — something no other investment can guarantee.

Which Nepal Life policy is most popular among your clients?

Bhatt: I’ve sold the most “Jeevan Samriddhi” policies, as it suits a wide range of clients.

How should people decide the coverage amount?

Bhatt: Clients should insure only a portion of their regular income. Oversized policies lead to high surrender rates when premiums become unaffordable. Agents must avoid selling large policies purely for commission and instead guide clients towards sustainable plans.

Should an agent be more loyal to the company or the client?

Bhatt: Always to the client. Clients invest based on their trust in the agent, not the company’s CEO or office. That trust must be protected above all else.
