Mitra Lal Neupane: A Journey from Soldier to Successful Insurance Professional

Kathmandu — Life often rewards those who refuse to give up, and Mitra Lal Neupane of Citizen Life Insurance stands as a shining example. His life story reflects how courage, determination, and consistent effort can turn challenges into milestones. From serving nearly three decades in the Indian Army to becoming a top-performing agency manager at Citizen Life Insurance, Neupane’s journey is one of perseverance, humility, and purpose.
Born in Parbat District, Neupane’s early life was marked by both academic excellence and a deep sense of discipline. A bright student from Nirmal Janasewa Secondary School, he completed his SLC in 2045 BS and later pursued law at Butwal Multiple Campus. However, family circumstances led him to seek employment early. What started as a trip to buy books turned into a turning point — he was encouraged by friends to join the Indian Army, where he went on to serve for 28 years, retiring honorably as a Subedar in 2077 BS.
Returning to Nepal, Neupane joined the Nepal Ex-Servicemen’s Association, where he met ex-serviceman Shobha Kumari Thapa. Her encouragement inspired him to explore the field of insurance — a decision that would transform his life once again. On Bhadra 22, 2078 BS, he obtained his agent license and began his career with Citizen Life Insurance.
“Initially, I knew nothing about insurance,” Neupane recalls. “But through continuous training and guidance from Citizen Life, I gradually understood the true value of life insurance. I even started my journey by insuring myself.”
Neupane’s honesty, strong communication skills, and deep understanding of financial and legal matters soon helped him stand out. His approach was simple yet impactful — meeting clients on their terms, listening first, and addressing misconceptions about insurance with patience and clarity. His dedication quickly bore fruit, and within just a few years, he established himself as one of the most successful agency managers at the Devdaha branch.
Family support, Neupane emphasizes, has been the foundation of his achievements. “My family not only encouraged me but also helped by promoting life insurance among our relatives and acquaintances,” he said. “Their trust and involvement have been a major strength in my success.”
Neupane’s journey at Citizen Life has been nothing short of remarkable. He has been consistently recognized in the company’s prestigious performance clubs — earning a spot in the Gold Club in 2078/79, the Silver Club in 2079/80 and 2080/81, and once again the Gold Club in 2081/82. His goal now is to qualify for the Diamond Club this year and celebrate the achievement with his family.
Beyond personal milestones, Neupane has devoted himself to spreading insurance awareness among communities with limited financial means. His outreach extends to citizens in Rupandehi, Devdaha, and surrounding areas, where he educates people about the importance of small savings for future security. “It’s a way to solve tomorrow’s big problems with today’s small savings,” he explains.
After nearly three decades of military service, Neupane’s transition to civilian life could have been uncertain. Instead, he transformed it into an inspiring second chapter — one that reflects his unwavering faith in hard work and resilience. Today, as a respected leader in the insurance field, he continues to move forward, embodying his belief that nothing is impossible with courage, faith, and perseverance.
