Kathmandu – Nepal’s commercial banking sector has recorded a total profit exceeding Rs 16.59 billion during the first two months of the current fiscal year 2082/83, according to data released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). The figure, however, represents a decline of 6.18 percent compared to the same period last fiscal year, when the 20 operating commercial banks collectively earned Rs 17.69 billion.

The decline in overall profit reflects a mixed performance among the banks—half of them witnessed a fall in earnings while the remaining half achieved growth during the review period covering the months of Shrawan and Bhadra.

Global IME Bank led the industry with the highest profit, earning Rs 1.62 billion—a 3.97 percent increase from the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Nabil Bank followed in second place with a profit of Rs 1.32 billion, although its earnings dropped by 20.09 percent year-on-year. Nepal Investment Mega Bank stood third, posting a profit of Rs 1.264 billion, down 10.51 percent from last year.

Among the top performers, Siddhartha Bank and NMB Bank showed notable profit growth. Siddhartha Bank’s profit surged by 40.18 percent to Rs 849 million, while NMB Bank’s profit rose by 32 percent to Rs 1.3 billion.

In contrast, several major banks reported a decline in earnings. Kumari Bank’s profit dipped by 2.60 percent to Rs 1.568 billion, while Prime Bank saw a 7.39 percent drop to Rs 1.4 billion.

Other banks’ profits during the review period include Laxmi Sunrise Bank with Rs 974.1 million, Everest Bank with Rs 912.2 million, Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) with Rs 885.8 million, and Nepal Bank with Rs 849.01 million. Similarly, Sanima Bank earned Rs 720 million, Prabhu Bank Rs 670 million, Krishi Bikas Bank Rs 589.8 million, Citizens Bank Rs 557.6 million, Standard Chartered Bank Rs 532.2 million, NIC Asia Bank Rs 490 million, Machhapuchhre Bank Rs 481.9 million, Himalayan Bank Rs 370.7 million, and Nepal SBI Bank Rs 354.5 million.
