Nepal Insurance Authority and TU Central Department of Statistics Ink MoU to Strengthen Insurance Research
Kathmandu — The Nepal Insurance Authority and Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Statistics havae signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at developing a collaborative framework for insurance-related research and academic exchange. The agreement was signed today at the Authority’s central office in Kupandol by Chairman of the Insurance Authority, Janak Raj Sharma, and Head of the Central Department of Statistics, Prabhat Upreti.
During the signing ceremony, Chairman Sharma said the partnership would support the Authority in advancing insurance-focused studies and accessing essential insurance data. He expressed confidence that, as new research and cutting-edge technologies continue to emerge globally, this collaboration would help enhance and expand Nepal’s own research capacity in the insurance sector.
Department Head Upreti highlighted that the bilateral agreement would directly benefit students and researchers by creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, access to key data, and deeper involvement in policy-focused studies. He noted that the MoU establishes a foundation for long-term cooperation between academia and the insurance regulator.
According to the agreement, research will be carried out on key areas such as the current status of Nepal’s insurance sector, its effectiveness and challenges, access to insurance, policy requirements, contribution of the sector to sustainable development, and government policies related to insurance and the broader financial system. The Authority will identify priority areas for research, while Tribhuvan University will provide experts and academic support. Both institutions will also exchange data for academic and research use and offer training on insurance research methodologies.
The event was attended by senior officials from the Nepal Insurance Authority, including Executive Director Sushil Dev Subedi, Directors Pujan Dhungel Adhikari, Kundan Sapkota, Shambha Raj Lamichhane, and Nirmal Adhikari. From Tribhuvan University, Prof. Dr. Shreejan Lal Shrestha and Lecturer Arun Yadav were present.
