The Government has started the Process of Increasing the Amount of Air Accident Insurance

Kathmandu :  The government has started the process of Air passenger-friendly legislation with provision of providing more than 25 Million Rupees to the passenger who will lose their life during the domestic flight accident.

Government Spokesperson as well as Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma announced the decision of the Council of Ministers meeting held on 28th of Falgun, 2080 B.S (11th of March, 2024 A.D) and said that they have given in-principle approval to draft a bill to regulate air transport services, organization’s liability and insurance.

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation registered the preliminary draft in the Council of Ministers in the second week of Falgun, 2080 B.S, to prepare a bill to regulate the liability and insurance of air transport service operators. Buddhisagar Lamichhane, the joint secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, has said that after receiving the in-principle approval to formulate the bill from the Council of Ministers, the process of creating air passenger-friendly laws will now proceed.

Lamichhane said, “The Council of Ministers has approved the draft bill prepared to increase the compensation received by the passengers of domestic air accidents. The draft with the consent of the Ministry of Law and Finance will now be submitted to the Council of Ministers after making a final draft with further study and theoretical consent. After that, the Minister of Tourism will register it in the Parliament and after it is discussed and approved by the Parliament, the law will increase the amount of insurance that the passengers of domestic flights will get by five times.”

At present, the passengers who lost their lives due to domestic flight accidents have been receiving $20,000 as an Insurance amount. After the bill takes the form of law, the families of the passengers concerned will get $100,000 as insurance amount. Currently, the insurance amount for international flights is $ 160,000.

Likewise, the government has given approval to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Nepal to submit candidacy for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the year 2027-2029 A.D and the Social and Economic Council for the period 2029-2031 A.D.
