Progressive Premium System Proposed for Nepal’s Health Insurance Program

January 13th, 2025

Kathmandu – The Health Insurance Reform Suggestion Task Force has proposed significant changes to Nepal’s health insurance program, including a progressive premium system and an increase in the premium amount from NPR 7,000 to NPR 15,000 annually.

The report, submitted by a task force led by Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya, aims to expand the reach and effectiveness of the health insurance program. It suggests basing premiums on income levels to ensure fair contributions from participants.

Currently, families of five are required to pay NPR 3,500 annually for coverage. Families with more than five members pay an additional NPR 700 per person. The insurance provides coverage of NPR 100,000 for a family of five, with an additional NPR 20,000 for larger families, capped at NPR 700 per extra member.
