Insurers Pay NPR 6.78 Billion in Claims in One Month, Life Insurers Account for NPR 5.47 Billion
Kathmandu — Insurance companies paid a total of NPR 6.78 billion in claims during the first month of fiscal year 2026/27, with life insurers alone accounting for NPR 5.47 billion.
According to data from the Nepal Insurance Authority, life and non-life insurance companies paid NPR 6.78 billion against 39,090 claims in July 2026. In July 2025, insurers paid NPR 6.74 billion against 38,529 claims.
Life insurance companies paid NPR 5.47 billion against 28,121 claims in July 2026. In July 2025, life insurers had paid NPR 5.09 billion against 28,059 claims.
The number of life insurance claims paid increased by 0.22 percent this year, while the amount paid rose by 7.36 percent. Although there was little change in the number of claims settled, the total amount paid by life insurers increased significantly compared with the previous year.
Non-life insurers paid NPR 1.31 billion against 10,969 claims in July 2026. In July 2025, they had paid NPR 1.65 billion against 10,470 claims.
The number of non-life insurance claims settled increased by 4.77 percent, but the total amount paid declined by 20.66 percent. Thus, although more claims were settled, the total amount paid was lower than in the same month last year.
How Many Claims Are Still Pending?
By the end of July 2026, 125,630 life insurance claims were still pending, involving liabilities worth NPR 10.14 billion.
At the end of July 2025, 57,603 life insurance claims were pending, with a total value of NPR 4.60 billion. The number of pending claims increased by 118.10 percent over the year, while the outstanding amount rose by 120.56 percent, indicating growing pressure on claims management in the life insurance sector.
The number and value of pending claims have also increased in the non-life insurance sector. As of the end of July 2026, 110,650 non-life insurance claims remained unsettled, representing outstanding liabilities of NPR 41.78 billion.
At the end of July 2025, non-life insurers had 100,908 claims pending settlement.
