Families of Injured and Deceased Nepali Workers in UAE Still Await Insurance Compensation, Government Urged to Act
Kathmandu — Families of Nepali migrant workers who were injured or lost their lives while working in the UAE are still waiting to receive the compensation and insurance payments they are legally entitled to.
The Nepali Embassy in Abu Dhabi has also been accused of failing to address these cases in a timely manner, leaving many affected families without access to the funds owed to them.
Nepali Samaj UAE, an organization representing the Nepali community in the UAE, has formally urged the government to take action on the issue.
In a joint letter addressed to Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen), Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, and Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Ramji Yadav, the organization’s President Ram Moktan, Council Chair Kamal Giri, and General Secretary Jeevan Pangeni called for immediate efforts to ensure that the victims’ families receive the compensation guaranteed under the law.
The letter, submitted through the Nepali Embassy in Abu Dhabi, states that for the past five to seven years, families of Nepali workers who died or suffered permanent disabilities in workplace accidents, other incidents, and road accidents in the UAE have continued to be denied justice.
The letter specifically names Khyamraj Pradhan of Jhapa, Bhoj Bahadur Saru of Palpa, Lakshyuram Tamang of Kavre, Ram Bahadur Oli of Rolpa, and Dipesh Regmi Chhetri of Syangja, noting that despite court rulings in their favor, their families have yet to receive compensation payments.
According to Nepali Samaj UAE, these are only representative cases, while hundreds of similar compensation and insurance claims remain unresolved.
President Moktan said that in many cases where UAE courts have already issued verdicts and insurance companies are obligated to pay, victims’ families have been unable to receive timely support due to a lack of coordination and diplomatic follow-up.
Nepali Samaj UAE stressed that stronger coordination among the Government of Nepal, the Nepali Embassy, and relevant authorities is essential to expedite ongoing legal proceedings in UAE courts and to ensure compensation is collected and delivered in cases where judgments have already been issued.
