Nicaragua Water Project Gets Boost from Record WTM London Donation
Rural communities in Nicaragua struggling with water scarcity and climate-related challenges are set to benefit from a new watershed restoration programme funded through a record donation from WTM London to international safe water charity Just a Drop.
The initiative will support communities in the Waslala and Camoapa regions, where prolonged drought, soil degradation and damaged water infrastructure have made access to safe drinking water increasingly difficult. Although Nicaragua is rich in freshwater resources, nearly 19 percent of its population still lacks access to safe water.
Implemented by Just a Drop and its local partner El Porvenir, the project will restore natural watersheds, promote sustainable farming practices such as agroforestry, improve soil and water conservation, and provide environmental education. The measures are expected to improve water security, restore farmland and strengthen the livelihoods of agriculture-dependent communities facing the growing impacts of climate change.
The programme is being funded through a £16,600 contribution raised during WTM London 2025, after exhibitors donated £8,300 and the organizers matched the amount. Additional visitor donations are expected to further increase the total.
The latest contribution extends WTM London’s 28-year partnership with Just a Drop, during which more than £140,000 has been raised to support safe water projects in nine countries. The charity will return to WTM London 2026 as the partnership continues to back water access and sustainability initiatives worldwide.
