Life Insurers See NPR 13.77 Billion in Policy Surrenders

Kathmandu — Life insurance companies paid out NPR 13.77 billion through policy surrenders during the fiscal year 2025/26, while more than 1.03 million policies were not renewed, according to data released by the Nepal Insurance Authority.

The surrender amount stood at NPR 13.77 billion by the end of June 2026. It was 9.11 percent lower than the NPR 15.15 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year.

The number of policyholders surrendering their policies also declined. A total of 90,387 policyholders surrendered their policies during the review period, down 16.49 percent from 108,238 a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the value of lapsed policies increased by 12.08 percent to NPR 39.25 billion. The figure stood at NPR 35.02 billion in the previous fiscal year.

The number of lapsed policies, however, fell by 17.16 percent. A total of 1,030,040 policies were not renewed during the fiscal year, compared with 1,243,365 in the previous year, the authority’s data show.
