The meeting between Xi and Biden is expected to be helpful in improving the bitter relationship between the two countries. After the meeting, in a press conference lasting about 20 minutes, US President Biden expressed the view that military contact between the US and China will be re-established, according to the BBC. During that time, Chinese President Xi said that both countries should jointly develop the correct opinion.
Xi said that there should not be a gap of mistrust between America and China, “There should not be a gap of disagreement separating America and China.” Instead, it is necessary to find a way to build a bridge to connect both sides. The two world powers, the US and China, have deep differences on many issues including military activities in the South China Sea, the Israel-Hamas war, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Taiwan issue.
After US President Biden said that there should be peace and stability in Taiwan, Chinese President Xi warned that he will not tolerate any activity that is against China’s interests. Aiming at America’s policy towards Taiwan, he suggested not to cross the “red line”.
Xi also said that Taiwan is a major issue in the relationship between the US and China, and that China has taken seriously the statements made by the US targeting Taiwan. He asked Biden not to favor an independent Taiwan and to support the peaceful reunification of China.
US-China relations have been deteriorating for a long time due to the trade war. Former President Donald Trump imposed additional customs duties on materials worth more than 550 billion dollars imported from China. China retaliated in a similar fashion by imposing additional tariffs on American goods.
Recently, the relationship between the two countries was further strained after the United States dropped a Chinese balloon into the sea calling it a spy balloon and the then speaker of the American House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited Taiwan. Angered by this, China closed military contact with the US. Now the American president has proposed to improve relations with China from that point.
After the meeting with San Francisco, American President Biden publicly said that military contact with China will be restored and dialogue with Chinese President Xi will also continue.During the meeting, it is said that cooperation was discussed not only in the fields of diplomacy, economy, agriculture, but also in the fields of counternarcotics, judicial, AI, science and technology.
The two leaders also talked about increasing the number of direct flights between the two countries, and increasing cooperation in the fields of tourism and education.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China and the United States discussed the need to advance coordination and cooperation on international and regional issues. It is also said that China and the United States should take joint leadership to solve the problems seen in the world. -With the help of the agency.
