MetLife Nepal’s Official Announcement of Legacy Tree Program

Kathmandu : MetLife Nepal has announced the official launch of its Legacy Tree program, where the company pledges to plant a tree in honor of every loved one whose life insurance death claim has been paid. The tree honors the memory of the insured, as well as fighting deforestation, providing clean air and habitat for animals, and land conservation.

After paying the life insurance claim, the company will provide each beneficiary with a letter informing them that a tree has been planted in memory of their loved one. In addition to honoring the deceased, it is said that the trees planted under the program will contribute to the revival of Bara district and benefit the future generations as well. Arbor Day Foundation and their implementing partner Ecoculture will run the event. Since the program began in late 2023, 7,000 trees have been planted in Bara, supporting the region’s ecosystem.

As the plants take root and reach for the sky, they symbolize hope, and the power of collective action to ensure a greener, more prosperous future for generations to come. Bara is under the threat of environmental destruction due to deforestation and riverine mining, which threatens the environmental infrastructure. Erosion has put roads and power poles at risk, while flooding and river damage have put homes, businesses and fresh water supplies at risk. The Arbor Day Foundation estimates that the 7,000 trees planted through the Legacy Tree Program will remove approximately 764 metric tons of carbon dioxide, prevent approximately 3,220 gallons of water runoff, and remove approximately 11.88 tons of air pollutants over 40 years.

Reflecting MetLife’s sustainability commitment, the revitalization initiative also aims to provide long-term employment, community support and environmental training.
