Nepal Insurance Authority’s Chair Surya Prasad Silwal to Face Further Investigation
Kathmandu – The chair of the Nepal Insurance Authority, Surya Prasad Silwal is under further investigation following allegations of corruption and document forgery. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has formally requested the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police to probe discrepancies in Silwal’s citizenship and passport, where conflicting birthdates have been recorded.
The CIAA suspects that Silwal forged documents to alter his birthdate on his citizenship certificate. This prompted the commission to involve the CIB for a thorough inquiry. CIAA sources have also confirmed that investigations into Silwal’s policy-level decisions during his tenure at the Insurance Authority are ongoing, as these are believed to involve corrupt practices.
Silwal has been accused of implementing several controversial policies, including a decision to allow microinsurance companies a share of foreign employment insurance through a pooling system. Such decisions, along with other alleged misconducts, have raised concerns about widespread corruption during his time in office.
