Nepal Insurance Authority Chair Selection Remains in Limbo

August 5th, 2026

Kathmandu — Two months after applications closed for the appointment of the Chairperson of the Nepal Insurance Authority, the government has yet to disclose the list of applicants or provide an official update on the selection process, raising questions about transparency and the prolonged delay.

The Ministry of Finance invited applications for the post on May 27, 2026, allowing interested candidates seven days to apply. According to unofficial information, 51 candidates submitted applications, although the ministry has not officially confirmed the figure.

Despite the completion of the application process, the ministry has not released the names of applicants or announced any progress in the selection process. Officials have also declined to comment on the number of applications received or the status of the appointment.

The position of Chairperson has remained vacant for more than a year. Meanwhile, the government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah has been in office for more than four months, yet the appointment process has not moved forward.

The delay has sparked speculation within the insurance industry over the reasons behind the prolonged silence. Industry stakeholders have questioned why no formal progress has been made despite applications having been collected within the stipulated deadline. They have also called on the government to provide greater clarity on the status of the recruitment process.

Unconfirmed reports circulating in the market have linked the delay to possible political considerations. However, no official evidence has been presented to substantiate those claims, and neither the Ministry of Finance nor the Prime Minister’s Office has commented on the speculation.

The Nepal Insurance Authority is the country’s insurance regulator, and its chairperson plays a central role in policy implementation, market supervision, licensing, and regulatory reforms. With the position remaining vacant, stakeholders say the government should complete the appointment process in a transparent and timely manner to strengthen confidence in the regulator’s governance.
