Sushila Karki Sworn in as Interim Prime Minister

Kathmandu — Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has formally assumed leadership of the interim government, taking the oath of office and secrecy as Prime Minister today.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the President’s Office, where President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath in accordance with Article 61 of the Constitution of Nepal.
Karki, who stepped into the role following two days of intense protests, has not expanded the Cabinet on her first day in office. According to constitutional provisions, the appointment of new ministers can only take place after the dissolution of the parliament in its first meeting, delaying immediate ministerial appointments.
Acting on the Prime Minister’s recommendation, the President also directed the interim government to hold new parliamentary elections within six months.
Karki’s appointment comes in the wake of Gen Z led protests demanding the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the formation of a non-partisan administration.
