Kathmandu — Nepal’s life and non-life insurance companies settled insurance claims worth nearly Rs. 93 billion during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year 2025/26, while claims amounting to Rs. 49.44 billion remain unpaid, according to the latest data released by the Nepal Insurance Authority.

The industry’s total claim payout reached Rs. 92.98 billion by the end of mid-June, representing a 27.46 percent increase from Rs. 72.94 billion paid during the corresponding period of the fiscal year 2024/25.

Life insurers account for over Rs. 66 billion in payouts

Life insurance companies settled 265,204 claims worth Rs. 66.42 billion during the review period, compared with 238,608 claims amounting to Rs. 52.64 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Non-life insurers, meanwhile, paid Rs. 26.56 billion against 140,351 claims, up from Rs. 20.30 billion paid for 127,282 claims during the corresponding period of the last fiscal year.

Outstanding claims exceed Rs. 49 billion

Despite the higher volume of claim settlements, insurers still have a significant backlog of unpaid claims.

As of the end of the first 11 months of the fiscal year, 178,136 insurance claims worth Rs. 49.44 billion were awaiting settlement.

Life insurers accounted for 60,954 pending claims valued at Rs. 554.71 million, compared with 54,422 claims worth Rs. 457.97 million outstanding during the same period last year.

Non-life insurers continued to account for the bulk of outstanding liabilities, with 117,182 unsettled claims totaling Rs. 43.89 billion as of mid-June. The figures underscore the relatively longer settlement period and larger claim values typically associated with the general insurance business.
