February 25th, 2025

Kathmandu – Health and Population Minister Pradip Paudel has stated that efforts are underway to address distortions in the health insurance program, with reforms progressing in two phases. According to the minister, a task force was formed to provide recommendations for improvements, and based on its report, an action plan has been prepared and implemented.

Speaking outside the Parliament building, Minister Paudel highlighted that policy amendments have already been made in the Health Insurance Act to enhance the program’s effectiveness, while additional reforms are being pursued as per the action plan.

Meanwhile, a recent video clip of Minister Paudel discussing issues within the health insurance system has gone viral on social media. The video, taken from an event with medical professionals, features the minister pointing out various flaws in the system. However, his secretariat has urged the public to watch the full video before forming an opinion, arguing that the clip has been selectively edited to misrepresent his statement.

Minister Paudel reiterated that while the current state of the health insurance program is unsustainable, the goal is not to abolish it but to improve and manage it effectively.
