Dr. Prakash Wagle: A Doctor Who Insured 73 Districts While Healing Lives

Kathmandu – Known for his medical service in Chitwan and surrounding areas, Dr. Prakash Wagle is not just a trusted name in physiotherapy, but also a record-setting insurance agent. Over the last 10 years, Dr. Wagle has insured citizens from 73 districts of Nepal, a feat believed to be the first of its kind. While serving as a medical doctor, he also works as the Senior Agency Manager at SuryaJyoti Life Insurance.
Beemapost’s Rajan Kathayat caught up with Dr. Wagle to talk about his journey, his motivation, and the dual path he continues to pursue.
How long have you been working in the insurance sector?
Dr. Prakash Wagle – I’ve been involved in life insurance for the past 10 years. I officially entered the field on Magh 13, 2072 B.S, and I’m currently serving as a Senior Agency Manager at SuryaJyoti Life Insurance.
What inspired you to join this profession alongside your medical career?
Dr. Prakash Wagle – A friend of mine, an engineer, invited me to an insurance awareness program held in Chitwan by a team from Butwal. I went out of curiosity but left deeply inspired. The program helped me understand the value of life insurance, and I decided to join as an agency manager right away.
How do you see the future of insurance agents in Nepal?
Dr Prakash Wagle – The future is bright—both for insurance companies and agents. While many youths go abroad for work, I believe this profession provides a good opportunity to build a stable career here in Nepal. If you’re committed and ethical, there’s no need to seek opportunities elsewhere.
How do you manage your time between your medical duties and insurance work?
Dr Prakash Wagle – I dedicate 6 to 8 hours to my medical practice and 2 to 4 hours for insurance. I make time for clients through direct meetings, calls, or online platforms like Messenger. Anyone can work 12–13 hours a day if they plan well and are passionate.
What kind of reactions do you receive from people when you counsel them about insurance?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Most responses are positive. As a medical professional, I offer clear and trustworthy counseling. I never provide misleading information or sell policies for personal gain. That’s probably why I haven’t had to face any negative backlash in my 10 years.
Have you ever encountered clients who were hesitant or skeptical?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Yes, some people initially doubt the insurance industry due to past experiences with unreliable companies. But I explain things transparently and guide them with correct information. Even those who hesitated have eventually agreed and appreciated the value of being insured.
How many clients have you insured so far, and how many claims have been processed?
Dr Prakash Wagle – I’ve insured about 980 individuals to date. Interestingly, not a single claim has had to be settled yet. But I’ve built strong trust with my clients and ensure they are fully protected.
There have been issues with Critical Illness (CI) claims in Nepal. What’s your view on this?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Insurance is a legal contract between the insurer and the insured. SuryaJyoti Life provides coverage for up to 35 critical illnesses, which is among the highest. But proper medical screening is essential. I believe insurance companies should prioritize integrity over just collecting premiums.
Some agents are said to sell policies without proper health checks. How do you see this trend?
Dr Prakash Wagle – It’s unethical. Shortcuts may bring short-term gain but cause long-term harm. Agents must act with honesty and responsibility. At SuryaJyoti Life, we strictly conduct health checks before issuing policies to avoid future complications.
Which policies are most popular at SuryaJyoti Life?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Our company offers 16 plans. The most widely sold include the Naulo Bal Jeevan Beema, Sawaadik Jeevan, and Dhan-Labh policies. These are trusted across the country, and I’ve personally sold policies in 73 districts.
Why do you think every citizen should have insurance?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Life is uncertain. Insurance is not just about savings; it’s about security. It offers protection when life takes unexpected turns. It’s essential for health and financial stability—for both individuals and their families.
Are you satisfied working as an agent with SuryaJyoti Life?
Dr Prakash Wagle -Very much. The company supports and motivates its agents in every possible way. Our CEO and chairman regularly acknowledge that agents are the backbone of the company, which inspires us to do better.
Nowadays, many people hold agent licenses—teachers, businesspeople, even social media influencers. How can citizens choose the right advisor?
Dr Prakash Wagle – A viral video or a Facebook post doesn’t make someone a good advisor. A good agent offers honest counseling, explains the policy clearly, and works in the client’s best interest, not for their benefit.
Finally, what can be done to make this profession more respected and responsible?
Dr Prakash Wagle – Firstly, the Insurance Board should strictly enforce existing regulations. Secondly, companies must train agents with factual and policy-based education, not hype like “double or triple returns.” Agents should be trained to inform, not mislead.
