Special Court Clears Former NIA Chairman Surya Prasad Silwal in Corruption Case

Kathmandu – The Special Court has acquitted Surya Prasad Silwal, the former chairman of the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA), in a corruption case related to allegations of submitting false information regarding his age.
The court’s decision came during a hearing on March 2, providing a legal clarification in favor of Silwal. The case against him was initially filed on December 9, 2024 by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), a constitutional body responsible for corruption control. Following the registration of the case, Silwal was suspended from his position as chairman of the authority.
The allegations stemmed from claims that Silwal had manipulated his age to obtain citizenship and extend his tenure. On these grounds, he was placed on mandatory leave on July 30, 2023. However, with the Special Court’s ruling clearing him of wrongdoing, the legal proceedings against him have concluded.
Despite the court’s decision, Silwal will not be reinstated as the chairman of the Nepal Insurance Authority.
