COVID-19 Insurance Claims Depend on Government Decision, Says Insurance Authority Chairman

July 11th, 2025

Kathmandu – Nepal Insurance Authority Chairman Sharad Ojha has clarified that the payment of claims related to COVID-19 insurance is not within the jurisdiction of the regulatory body, stating that the matter now lies under the responsibility of the government.

Speaking at a recent public program, Chairman Ojha emphasized that while insurance companies have fulfilled their responsibilities regarding the COVID-19 insurance policies, the final decision on settling outstanding claims must come from the Government of Nepal.

“You are all aware of the context—how the policy was introduced and implemented. Necessary arrangements will be made based on the government’s decision.” – Ojha stated.

Ojha’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns from policyholders and industry observers regarding the unresolved COVID-19 insurance claims. Neither the government nor the Insurance Authority has yet taken definitive action to resolve the matter, leaving many claims unsettled.

During his address, Ojha also expressed a commitment to transparency in the Authority’s future operations. He announced plans to publish a policy review format starting next year, acknowledging that this year’s policy and program marks the Authority’s first formal initiative and thus lacks a review of prior implementation.

Insurance experts have raised concerns that the prolonged delay and lack of clear resolution regarding COVID-19 insurance claims could undermine public confidence in Nepal’s insurance sector.
