Insurance Claims Soar to Rs 843.8 Million Following Rasuwa Floods and Landslides

Kathmandu – The devastating floods and landslides that struck Rasuwa district on Ashar 23 (July 7) have triggered insurance claims worth Rs 843.81 million, as per the latest figures released by the Nepal Insurance Authority.

According to the Authority, a total of 68 insurance claims have been submitted to 11 non-life insurance companies as of Shrawan 8 (July 24). These claims are related to damages caused by relentless rainfall, flooding, and landslides that have impacted life and infrastructure across the district.

Himalayan Life Insurance has emerged as the company facing the largest liability, with two major claims filed totaling Rs 550 million. Shikhar Insurance follows with 12 claims worth Rs 168.5 million, while Neco Insurance has reported three claims amounting to Rs 51.2 million.

Other companies affected include Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance, which has submitted two claims worth Rs 26.5 million, and Nepal Insurance, with 12 claims totaling Rs 12.2 million. United Ajod Insurance has filed three claims worth Rs 9.1 million, while IGI Prudential Insurance has registered nine claims amounting to Rs 7.5 million.

Sanima GIC Insurance and NLG Insurance have each filed six claims, with values of Rs 7.5 million and Rs 4.7 million respectively. Meanwhile, Siddhartha Premier Insurance and Prabhu Insurance have submitted claims amounting to Rs 3.1 million and Rs 2.8 million.

The claims span various categories of general insurance. As of Shrawan 8 (July 24), the highest number of claims—worth Rs 580.1 million—have been lodged under property insurance. Marine insurance has seen seven claims worth Rs 162.3 million, while engineering and contractor risk insurance accounts for Rs 54 million from three claims. Motor insurance has also taken a significant hit, with 38 public vehicle claims amounting to Rs 25.9 million and 14 private vehicle claims totaling Rs 21.4 million.

In light of the escalating financial exposure, the Nepal Insurance Authority has issued a directive to all concerned insurers, instructing them to expedite the assessment and settlement of claims.
