Kathmandu – Among the rising stars in Nepal’s insurance sector, Namita Neupane, Agency Manager at Sanima Reliance Life, stands out for her remarkable achievements. With years of experience in both business and social service, Neupane has earned a respected name in the insurance world and continues to inspire as one of the top female insurance professionals in the country.
In a recent conversation, Neupane shared her journey into the insurance sector, the challenges she faced, and her views on the future of the industry.
How did you enter the insurance field?
Namita Neupane: I joined the insurance industry in 2074 B.S. Initially, I worked with an insurance company until the end of the fiscal year 2074/75. Now, I am associated with Sanima Reliance Life Insurance. I never imagined I would achieve this level of success when I first started; I joined because my friends encouraged me. But today, I’m grateful to have established my identity through this profession.
What helped you establish yourself in this field?
Namita Neupane: Success in any field isn’t easy. In life insurance, we face challenges, especially when we have to go out into the market and persuade people about the importance of insurance. But I made a plan and competed only with myself. I focused on my goals, and this approach helped me achieve success. My competition was not with others, but with myself. That mindset has led me to where I am today.
Did you ever imagine reaching this stage when you first started?
Namita Neupane: When I first entered the insurance field, I had little idea I would make such progress. Initially, I only had 91 thousand premium and was struggling to meet targets. But within three months, I became the top insurance agent in terms of business generated. I was surprised at my own success, but I soon learned that with determination and hard work, success comes. Today, I’m an MDRT member and have consistently been part of the prestigious TOT (Top of the Table) rankings.
Who do you credit for your success in this profession?
Namita Neupane: First and foremost, I credit myself for motivating and pushing myself to reach this stage. Secondly, my team, who have supported and encouraged me every step of the way, and finally, my family, whose unwavering support has made it possible for me to maintain my position in this field.
As a woman, did you face any challenges balancing family and business?
Namita Neupane: There are always challenges. I have to juggle being a politician, a housewife, a mother, and a businesswoman. But I’ve learned that time management is key. When you have the support of your family and your team, you can overcome most challenges. I believe this support has been essential to my success.
What are your thoughts on the insurance agent profession and its benefits for women?
Namita Neupane: The insurance profession offers great flexibility, especially for women. I’ve been able to balance my political work, family life, and business responsibilities effectively. The key to success is understanding your background and utilizing it. As a woman, I’ve been able to use my political background to inspire and encourage others to understand the benefits of insurance.
What is your view on the current state of the insurance sector in Nepal?
Namita Neupane: There are mixed reactions about insurance. Some people believe in it wholeheartedly, while others are skeptical. The insurance profession has much to offer, but there’s still a need for the government and insurance authorities to improve public perception. Internationally, agents are treated with more respect, and this is something Nepal can learn from.
What do you think about the upcoming insurance regulations?
Namita Neupane: We’ve raised our voices regarding the upcoming regulations, and while we’re hopeful that the authorities will address our concerns, there’s still much to be done. The government needs to recognize the critical role that insurance agents play as intermediaries, not just salespeople.
How do you view the current challenges posed by the economic slowdown?
Namita Neupane: While the economic slowdown has impacted large insurance policy sales, it has also led to a shift toward smaller policies. This is a positive change as it allows us to reach grassroots levels. There’s a growing awareness about the importance of smaller premiums, and I see this as a silver lining in the current economic scenario.
Finally, what advice would you give to those interested in becoming insurance agents?
Namita Neupane: Insurance is a great career choice if you have the right mindset. I would advise potential agents to focus on long-term success, invest in training, and understand the importance of insurance in people’s lives. It’s not just about selling policies; it’s about building trust and helping people make secure decisions for their future.
