Insurance Authority Enters 58th Year, Stronger Regulation Now a Key Responsibility
Kathmandu — The Nepal Insurance Authority has entered its 58th year starting today. The 58th anniversary has already been being marked since last week through various programs. However, due to the government’s cost-cutting campaign, the authority will not hold any formal ceremony this year. Instead, only an informal tea reception will be organized in the evening.
The Insurance Committee, established on May 15, 1969, was later transformed into the Nepal Insurance Authority on November 9, 2022 and has since been playing a regulatory role in the insurance sector.
In its early years, the body remained under the Ministry of Finance for a long time. By the time it completed 57 years, it had established itself as a capable, strong, and independent regulatory authority.
After the Insurance Act of 1968 was enacted, the then Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Kirti Nidhi Bista formed the Insurance Committee on May 15, 1969. At that time, although the Insurance Act had already been issued by the Panchayat-era parliament, the committee was still established as a regulatory body.
Although the institution has now evolved into the Insurance Authority, it has not been free from political interference. In the past, it was influenced by leaders from Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and CPN (Maoist Centre). Currently, it is also reported to be facing attempts of influence from within the Rastriya Swatantra Party, particularly from the team associated with Prime Minister Balendra Shah.
As it celebrates its 58th anniversary, the Insurance Authority is now established as an independent and empowered regulatory body. It is working to ensure effective regulation in line with the growing size of the insurance industry and to institutionalize the sector’s achievements. In the coming days, it faces the continued responsibility of making regulation even more effective.
On the occasion of its 58th anniversary, the Insurance Authority has extended greetings to reinsurance companies, life insurance companies, non-life insurance companies, micro-insurance companies, reinsurance brokerage firms, insurance brokers, agents, and surveyors. It has also expressed heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all insurance professionals.
