Gen-Z Protests Trigger Record Rs 22.25 Billion Insurance Claims, Bagmati Province Records Highest

Kathmandu — The Gen-Z protests that began on Bhadra 23 have inflicted unprecedented damage across Nepal, leading to the highest initial insurance claims ever recorded in the country. According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, as of Ashoj 5, a total of 2,478 claims amounting to Rs 22.2 billion have been registered.
Among the claims, property insurance has recorded the highest loss, with 538 cases amounting to Rs 18.61 billion — more than 83 percent of the total claims. Motor insurance has also been heavily affected, with 1,778 claims worth Rs 2.95 billion. Engineering and contractor risk insurance, transport insurance, and other categories have collectively added hundreds of millions of rupees to the total.
Bagmati Province has emerged as the most severely affected region, both in terms of claim amount and the number of claims filed. Being the center of the protests and home to the capital, it has reported 1,343 claims totaling Rs 17.97 billion. Other provinces have also seen notable damages: Koshi has reported claims worth Rs 1.65 billion, Gandaki Rs 1.29 billion, Madhesh Rs 552.8 million, Lumbini Rs 456.9 million, Sudurpaschim Rs 239.6 million, and Karnali Rs 893.3 million.
The Nepal Insurance Authority has directed insurance companies to expedite the verification and settlement of claims to provide swift relief to the victims.
