Surya Prasad Silwal’s Tenure at Nepal Insurance Authority Ends Amid Legal Battles

February 2nd, 2025

Kathmandu -The tenure of Surya Prasad Silwal, the suspended chairman of the Nepal Insurance Authority, officially concluded on January 31, 2025, marking the end of his term. Silwal, who was suspended after the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed a corruption case against him in the Special Court on December 9, 2024, had been hopeful of resuming his position before his term expired.

Silwal had reportedly expressed confidence that the Special Court would rule in his favor before the end of his term. However, with the case still unresolved and the next hearing scheduled for February 9, his hopes of returning to the Authority, even briefly, have come to an end.

The Special Court expedited the case proceedings, holding three hearings within a month and 20 days on January 7, January 20, and January 26. Despite this, the case could not be concluded in time. Sources claim Silwal made efforts to speed up the process, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

Silwal’s tenure began on February 1, 2021, when he was appointed as chairman of the then-Insurance Committee by the Council of Ministers. However, his time in office was marred by allegations of policy-level corruption, which eventually led to his suspension.

With his term now officially over, questions linger about whether the incoming chairman will investigate the alleged corruption and irregularities during Silwal’s tenure. The future of governance at the Nepal Insurance Authority remains a topic of significant interest in the insurance sector.
